Play Therapy Adelaide

www.playtherapyadelaide.com.au

Play Therapy uses Play, specifically chosen toys and the therapeutic relationships to assist children to communicate their inner experiences and feelings, create understandings, nurture relationships and deepen attachments. Play Therapy is a counselling practice beneficial for children aged 3-11 years, it is a method of meeting and responding to the wellbeing needs of children and is extensively acknowledged by experts as an effective and suitable intervention in dealing with children's holistic development. "Play is symbolic communication" (West, 1996). A Child-Centered Play Therapist is non-directive, meaning we trust the child to lead in their chosen actions (play) and conversation. We respect the healing path chosen by the child to be right and true for that child at the time and in their time. Child-Centered Play Therapy promotes positive self-esteem, resilience, self-regulation, social competence, trust and improved healthy attachment relationships. It can support children through: * Family changes i.e. separation, divorce, birth of a sibling * Social and emotional development i.e. making friends, shyness, self-regulation, regressed behaviours * Excessive emotions i.e. anger, grief and loss, fear, sadness, anxiety, worry * Selective mutism * Abuse, neglect and/or Trauma * Low self-esteem and/or Resilience * Parent/Child attachment * Chronic illness "Play is the highest development of childhood, for it alone is the free expression of what is in the child's soul... Children's play is not mere sport. It is full of meaning and import' (Froebel, 1903)
