PRODUCTIVE AGRICULTURAL LINKAGES AND MARKETING SYSTEMS

palmsghana.wordpress.com

Productive Agricultural Linkages and Marketing Systems (P.A.L.M.S.) program pools appropriate technologies and resources together to facilitate moringa, vegetable , cereal, and fruit supply chain with proper and strengthened organizational capacities and linkages for sustainable production and marketing both local and export. The program was instituted in 2005 by Christian Volunteer Service International and was on a pilot scale till 2009 when it received a grant from ExxonMobil Foundation which enabled the organization to implement PALMS phases 1 and 2 from 2009 to 2012 in five regions in Southern Ghana. To date, 300,000 farmers have been benefitted indirectly from the program and 100,000 vegetable farmers directly through the use of moringa leaf extract which contains plant growth hormones on their vegetables which have increased their produce by three to four times more than the normal yield translating into more income for them. Farmers in the country, especially the female farmers who form the majority, have been using obsolete methods for agricultural production with resultant low yields. The agricultural mechanization concept of the project is getting them away from the drudgery of farm work, making them to work effectively now. Technology is changing their way of life for the better and PALMS is solidly behind that. The program is delving into commercial production of vegetables and moringa in addition to biodiesel and later solar drying systems to pave the way for effective service. PALMS is being changed into a full-fledged hybrid company to enable it to function well on a sustainable basis. A holistic commodity chain approach backed by appropriate technology from nursery to the final market is employed by PALMS which is quite unique in the present agricultural setting in the country and is quite appropriate for the 60 per cent of the population who are in the agricultural sector of which seventy per cent are women.
