More than thirty years on, Sands continues to provide support to all bereaved parents and families who have suffered the death of a baby anytime from conception through to 28 days after birth - this includes miscarriage, neonatal death, stillbirth, ectopic pregnancy and genetic/medically advised termination. Sands are a self-help support group comprised of parents who have experienced the death of a baby. Sharing with others who have had similar experiences can assist parents to work through the often intense grief which follows the death of a baby. There are active Sands groups in Queensland, Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania other states are serviced through our phone support line and online through social media. Our Mission: Sands Australia’s core mission is to facilitate the provision of consistently high national standards of bereavement support, education, information and communications, administered by local organisations and with a local approach. Our Vision: Sands supports families in all stages of pregnancy loss and new born death through understanding and hope. Sands imagines a future where: •Every parent knows of Sands, is able to access Sands services through their preferred medium, and is familiar with Sands messages surrounding healthy grieving. •Parents receive adequate, sensitive support from their family and friends. •There is no stigma attached to pregnancy loss. •Medical professionals adequately communicate the risks and realities of pregnancy loss to parents before and during pregnancy. •Medical professionals, including radiographers, GPs, midwives and obstetricians, are able to communicate sensitively and adequately with parents following pregnancy loss.
