The African Artists Community Development Project began as a small personal effort to help those in Zambia to combat HIV/AIDS and the cultural effects of the disease. I buy African crafts at fair market value and sell them in the US. Then I send the profits back to the Mama Bakhita Center for Disabled Children and support other educational and income generation projects there as well. I recently heard this called empowerment commerce.
