After-School All-Stars, Washington DC

After-School All-Stars, Washington DC (ASAS DC) provides free and comprehensive after-school programs that keep children safe and help them succeed in school and life. Our vision is for our All-Stars to be safe and healthy, to graduate high school and go to college, to find careers they love and then give back to their communities. ASAS DC opened its doors in fall 2013 at Stuart-Hobson Middle School, the closest Title I school to the U.S. Capitol. This “model site” was intended not only to serve nearly 200 low-income students at the schools with academic and enrichment activities but also was intended to be an instrumental demonstration site for our advocacy efforts. Policymakers and political leaders visited the school to understand first-hand the importance of after-school and the funding to support it. In January of 2015, at the behest of DC Public Schools (DCPS), ASAS DC expanded our programs to Charles Hart Middle School in Ward 8, where we currently serve nearly 100 children. Charles Hart is located in one of the city’s most underserved and impoverished neighborhoods, with high crime and low socioeconomic mobility. Thanks to careful strategic planning and effective grant writing as well as strong partnerships with school communities, ASAS DC expanded from two to seven schools in the last three years, to provide programming at Leckie Education Campus, Charles Hart Middle School, John Hayden Johnson Middle School and Somerset Prep DC in Ward 8, César Chávez PCS in Ward 1, and Two Rivers PCS and Stuart-Hobson Middle School in Ward 6. In our seven schools, we offer full-time programming, 5 days a week from the time school ends to 6:00 pm, reaching over 600 students daily.
