Houston Aphasia Recovery Center (HARC)

www.harctx.org

The Houston Aphasia Recovery Center was conceived in 2008 to address a conspicuous void in Houston's medical services community. As the fourth-largest city in the country, Houston has one of the most respected medical centers in the world, yet nothing existed for long-term recovery and wellness for people with aphasia, their families and caregivers. All that changed on February 2, 2010. HARC opened its doors with programs for participants with aphasia, their caregivers, families and volunteers. The entry point for new participants and caregivers is the Introductory Program that evaluates communication ability and provides techniques for communicating with people with aphasia. The first step is simple: Simply call for more information and to set up a tour of our facility. After the screening process is complete, you will participate in the Introductory Program. After that, you and your caregiver will be part of the HARC family. Our Wellness Program helps build language skills and provides practice for understanding and being understood in a safe, fun environment. The computer lab helps participants answer email, use the Internet, and practice language skills using aphasia-friendly software. There's a large community room for socializing, playing games or enjoying a cup of coffee with conversation. You can bring a lunch and visit with friends old and new. We're open Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays for programs from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Mondays are by appointment only.
