Association of Ukrainians In Great Britain

www.augb.co.uk

The Association of Ukrainians in Great Britain (AUGB) is the largest representative body for Ukrainians and those of Ukrainian descent in the UK. It exists to develop, promote and support the interests of the Ukrainian community. AUGB operates a network of 28 local branches with their own social/cultural centres across the UK. There are also 19 smaller branches and sub-branches which do not have their own centre, but organise periodic events for Ukrainians in their area. At local level, we support Ukrainian Community Schools, Day Centres and a range of cultural and social activities. We have a highly respected reference library and archive based at our head-office in London, The Shevchenko Library and Archive, which is one of the most valuable assets of the Association. It houses a collection of more than 30,000 works, which include books and periodicals on Ukrainian themes and facilitates research for students, academics and other visitors. There are over 10,000 archive items which include documents, manuscripts and other items of cultural and historical value. There is also a large collection of Ukrainian postage stamps, sculptures and other works of art. AUGB previously published the only bilingual Ukrainian-English newspaper in the UK, ‘Ukrayinska Dumka’. AUGB works closely with other community organisations, including the Association of Ukrainian Women, the Association of Ukrainian Teachers and Educators, youth organisations and others. The Association was founded in 1946 by Ukrainians who came to Great Britain at the end of the Second World War. Aims: A thriving and growing membership which embraces Ukrainians of all generations and all backgrounds. Proactive elected leadership which works in partnership with others and communicates effectively with members, the wider community and the outside world. A strong and vibrant cultural life through a network of flourishing, active and well-managed community centres.
