IITH 5G Success Story: India made its maiden entry into global wireless standards in 5G with its academia leading the way. The IITH team along with other academic and Indian Industry members made substantial contributions to the development of 5G with more than 400 technical papers submitted to the 3GPP work groups over a 5-year time span (2017-21). During this time, several patents have developed and some of which are declared as 5G standards-essential patents (SEPs). A new waveform technology called “pi/2 BPSK with spectrum shaping” that enables the development of large rural cells has been introduced in that is now an integral part of 5G standards. Funding from DoT and MeitY enabled IITH to develop prototypes of a 5G base station, user equipment (UE), and NB-IoT System-on-Chip (SoC). WiSig Networks Pvt Ltd, a start-up company incubated at the IITH technology incubator (i-tic foundation), has been commercializing some of these IPs and products. 6G Mission: ITU has recently initiated the development of the IMT2030 vision (IMT2030 is the technical name for 6G). It is imperative that India plays a pivotal role in defining 6G and takes leadership in determining the critical performance requirements for India. It is paramount to influence the global standards (in ITU and 3GPP) with enhanced R&D. This will help propel Indian technologies into the next-generation standards and aid in building an indigenous technology that will be deployed not only in India but also globally.
