SLAM Education is a Newcastle Start-up providing 21st century education to teachers and kids through after school and holiday and a new approach to teacher professional development programs. Expanding our kids’ science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) opportunities is a national imperative. The Science and Mathematics skills of our Australian kids are flatlining, and are falling behind other countries. Our kids are ill-prepared to pursue STEM careers; even more so when they are from disadvantaged backgrounds. 65% of primary school children will work in job that doesn't exist today! Kids therefore need to learn to think critically; to question; to investigate; to interpret; to collaborate; to solve problems; and understand the complex world we live in. In an age where information is only a click away we do not teach – we facilitate. SLAM programs engage kids in hands-on, experiential learning across all STEM disciplines within exciting and immersive projects that also include arts and humanities. SLAM works with schools; communities; and the education system to develop the skills kids need to grow and thrive in the new and exciting world where understanding science and mathematics; coupled with collaboration, creativity, design thinking and use of technology will be fundamental to reaching their full potential.
