PlastiSens ApS
www.plastisens.comPlastiSens ApS was founded in 2014 as a spin out from the Department of Micro- and Nanotechnology, Technical University of Denmark. PlastiSens is developing and providing novel sensor systems for detection of antibiotics in milk. The company is owned by the founding team together with Capnova A/S as seed investor. Currently, on-line detection for antibiotics typically takes place at the dairy factory after the milk from a number of individual farmers has been collected in a common tank truck. Tests taken at the dairy factory are therefore tests pertaining to the entire milk tank and depending on test method may take from 10 minutes and up to 3 hours to perform by specialized laboratory technicians. If antibiotics are detected, then the entire tank of milk must be disposed of, so as not to reach consumers or interfere with dairy processes. As a consequence, there is an estimated yearly loss of € 2 million in Denmark and € >50 million in Europe. PlastiSens offers a novel hand-held sensor technology that traces a wide range of antibiotic residues in milk. The sensor is designed to allow for on-site testing by the user without the need for any prior training, all within a time scope of two minutes. After use, the display will inform the user whether or not the level of antibiotics exceeds the MRL, a threshold for antibiotics sanctioned by the European Union. This will allow to make decisions on-site and, most importantly, before contamination of clean milk already in the transport tank.
