The National Innovation Service transforms public systems to help communities thrive. We collaborate with the communities most impacted by public systems to build the foundation for long-term systems transformation. COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT We work directly with people with lived experience of the issues at hand, community-based advocates, and local coalitions to inform our understanding of local system failures. Those partners are positioned as key stakeholders in decision-making throughout the systems change process. RESEARCH We leverage qualitative and quantitative research methods from across the social sciences to uncover needs, develop insights, and identify opportunities for transformation with a focus on the experiences and needs of historically marginalized communities. SERVICE DESIGN We map, dissect, and rebuild services to account for unmet needs, optimize processes, counter racism and white supremacy, and promote accessibility. We consider technology as a core component of most modern services and design experiences that leverage it. ORGANIZATIONAL DESIGN We build and implement organizational structures, processes, and practices to drive new behaviors, advance racial equity, and support the implementation of new systems. POLICY We work with communities to translate their visions for the future into policy frameworks, move these frameworks through legislative processes, and establish structures to implement their visions. We do this through a racial equity lens, driven by input from the customers of a system. IMPLEMENTATION AND EVALUATION We work with our partners to implement structural process, organizational, policy, and technological improvements, as well as develop criteria for evaluating change at a system level. LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT & CAPACITY BUILDING We train teams in all of the above disciplines, with an emphasis on systems thinking, racial equity, and participatory research and design.
