Learning Disabilities Association of America

www.ldaamerica.org

LDA’s mission is to create opportunities for success for all individuals affected by learning disabilities through support, education and advocacy. LDA visualizes a world in which learning disabilities are universally understood, so all individuals are accepted, supported, and empowered to live a self-determined life. In March of 1963, parents of children with learning disabilities representing local support groups from around the country gathered in Chicago for a national conference. The professionals and parents that participated shared a common concern: the recognition of the dire need for services for their children, services that did not exist. During the months that followed, many preliminary details towards formation of a national organization were worked out. With a core of volunteers agreeing to become its nucleus, the Association for Children with Learning Disabilities (ACLD), now known as The Learning Disabilities Association of America, was created and incorporated in January, 1964. From those beginnings, the Learning Disabilities Association of America has grown to serve tens of thousands of members with learning disabilities, their families, educators, and the professionals who work with them. Today, LDA is the largest member-based non-profit volunteer organization advocating for individuals with learning disabilities. LDA advocates for the almost three million students of school age with learning disabilities and for adults affected with learning disabilities. LDA state and local affiliates, through their affiliation with LDA National, work continuously for individuals with learning disabilities, their parents and the professionals who serve them. LDA is supported by its members. Learn more about becoming an LDA Member by visiting ldaamerica.org/membership/
