The Elizabeth Fry Society of Calgary (EFry) was incorporated in December 1965. We are a federally registered charity and incorporated under the Societies Act of Alberta. We operate under the direction of a community-based board of directors. Our initial focus, which remains significant today, is to provide support to women who are in conflict with the legal system. In this regard, EFry is a niche organization in Calgary, specializing in providing support and visitation to women in correctional settings as well as community-based women. Over the years, our programs and client base have expanded to include specialized services in related areas of the legal system. Elizabeth Fry (1780 – 1845) was a prison reformer in England. She visited many prisons throughout England, teaching in prisons and bringing in necessities for them. She advocated for prison reform and was able to see successes during her lifetime. The services of EFry continued to be supported by a variety of generous groups and individuals.
