The English Language Institute (ELI) at the University of Pittsburgh provides courses for international students who want to improve their English for academic, professional, or personal reasons. Since 1964, our mission has been to serve our students, our university and our profession. In our nearly 60 years of experience, we have helped over 14,000 students from more than 130 countries achieve their career and personal goals through English, while also providing students the opportunity to experience life on an American university campus and interact with American students. ELI students come from all over the world. In a typical term, there are students from 20 to 25 different countries. The ELI has a variety of English language programs for non-native speakers to choose from. Our Intensive English Program is a CEA-Accredited, 13-week program that is offered in the Spring, Summer, and Fall of each year. I-20s for full-time study can be issued for this program. For part-time students who cannot attend daytime classes, a General English Evening Course is also offered. The ELI also offers a Community Conversation Course, which is designed to help non-native speakers of English in the Pittsburgh area improve their conversational speaking and listening skills. Each summer, the ELI offers a Professional and Academic English Program (PAEP), which immerses incoming graduate students and professionals in culture and language experienced in academic and professional environments. Also offered in the summer is the US Law and Legal English Program (LLEP), a collaboration with the University’s Center for International Legal Education in the School of Law. This non-degree program is designed for law students coming from universities from outside the US. Custom English programs can also be developed for your school, business, or government organization for groups of 15 or more.
