Sustainable Innovations (SI) was founded to pioneer enterprises for access to water and health care in the rural communities and urban slums. It employs innovations in technologies, sciences, and economics to build social enterprises that are holistically sustainable – culturally, socially, institutionally, operationally, and economically. The two key programs are Aakash Ganga and Arogya. Aakash Ganga (River from the Sky): This innovative rainwater harvesting system collects rain during the monsoon season for use year-round. The captured rainwater is divided into two parts: one part is stored at the homeowner’s premises for their exclusive use and the other is channeled into the community reservoir. The sharing affords equal access to poor families. Part of the community water is used for horticulture to generate revenue, enough to pay for its upkeep, thus assuring operational sustainability. Arogya ("Disease-free" in Hindi): This is an enterprise model for delivering health care services at an extremely low cost. Arogya brings health care to the doorsteps of vulnerable people and rural communities by providing local youth with the training and technology to be able to diagnose common ailments and offer treatment options. SI was registered as a 501(C) (3) organization in Virginia, USA in 2008. Over the ensuing years, SI has won acclaim and wide recognition through several awards, notable among them being: The 2018 Distinguished Alumni award by University of South Florida for humanitarian services; CNN’s 2015 Top Ten CNN Heroes for community services; the 2012 Purpose Prize Award for social innovations; the 2010 Lemelson–Massachusetts Institute of Technology Sustainability Award for sustainability; the 2010 Energy Globe World Award for Environmental Sustainability; and the 2006 and 2007 World Bank Development Marketplace Awards for sustainable water and health enterprises.
