Wave for Change

www.waveforchange.org.uk

We are a grass-roots, volunteer-led, charitable incorporated organisation. We want to see more places in the heart of local communities where people with and without learning disabilities can easily mix socially and enjoy doing things with and not for each other. This helps to overcome the anxiety and (innocent) ignorance that can often lead to social segregation. We have seen the transforming difference made by places of genuine inclusion in our neighbourhood (www.wavecafe.org; www.wave-for-change.org.uk/muswell-hill) - helping to change negative attitudes and prejudice around learning disability. Instead of seeing viscous circles of avoidance in social places (due to fear of saying or doing the wrong thing), we see virtuous circles of connection forming between people with and without learning disabilities. 75% of residents surveyed in Muswell Hill say that our work benefits the whole community. Here's what people have experienced through being involved with Wave activities: "I understand now that it is about learning from each other rather than my previous view which was about the need ‘to help' people with a learning disability." "It helps me feel like I belong – I feel more accepted here." We now want to share this experience with other communities. Wave is registered with the Charity Commission, registered charity number 1190354.
