This is achieved via passive flow control techniques, i.e. engineered surface micro-porosity and micro-texturization, designed to be integrated in existing Thermal Protection Systems (TPS). HySonic has also recently started an effort in hypersonic propulsion, specifically in the design of passive control strategies to improve the combustion efficiency of high-speed propulsion systems. HySonic leverages the technical knowledge matured in Prof. Scalo’s group at Purdue University (https://engineering.purdue.edu/~scalo/), which is currently funded by the Air Force, Army, National Science Foundation, Department of Energy, US Navy, Rolls-Royce and Ford Motor Company. Scalo has received three separate Young Investigator Program (YIP) awards from the Department of Defense in hypersonic boundary layer transition (Air Force), hypersonic boundary layer turbulence (Navy) and vortex dynamics (Army).
