The Servant Center

www.theservantcenter.org

The Servant Center has been providing hope and support to members of our community living with homelessness, hunger, or disability for over 20 years. Our mission is to empower the homeless and disabled, particularly veterans, to become independent, contributing members of our community through housing, healthcare, and restorative services. What started as a faith-based community outreach program to help people living with homelessness to apply for Social Security benefits has grown with the needs of our to include five main programs. Our flagship program is Servant House, a 21-bed former detox facility that has been converted into the Triad's only transitional housing program for homeless and disabled veterans. Our residents spend up to two years learning life skills, getting managed medical care, and setting goals for their recovery with their case manager. Our goal is for all of them to be able to move into permanent housing with a steady source of income when they leave. Many of our residents want to stay connected to our services here, and for them and other disabled veterans we operate two permanent supportive housing apartment buildings, Glenwood and Haworth House. There residents can live independently while still having access to a case manager to help them when needed. Growing out of the pilot program that started it all, our Disability Assistance Program is still helping people who are homeless and disabled to apply for and receive Social Security disability benefits. Our pantry program, currently located on the edge of historic downtown Greensboro, serves over 500 individuals and families that are living with food insecurity each month. Finally, The Servant Center is the lead agency in the Americorps Partnership to End Homelessness. This program coordinates Americorps Volunteers who provide thousands of hours of service every year in fields from social work to volunteer management across several partner organizations.
