Infopunt Proefdieronderzoek
www.infopuntproefdieronderzoek.be‘InfoPunt ProefdierOnderzoek’ aims to provide fact-based and accurate information on how, when and why animals are used in research. It serves as a communication platform between scientists and the broader public, for fact-driven discussions on laboratory animal research and the medical advancements they create. We feel that the conversation on the pros and cons of animal research is only possible when correct information is available. Only with the right context and background, can we reflect on our personal moral choices in relation to animal research. We believe that animal research is essential for biomedical and scientific progress. However, animal research should only be conducted with the utmost respect, care and responsibility for the animals involved and solely by individuals who have received the necessary training to conduct this research. Adherence to the 3R principle (reduction, refinement and replacement) is vital and if alternatives are available, they must be used. Therefore, we also report on progress made in the fields of reduction, refinement and replacement of animal research to ensure swift implementation where possible. Good science can only be achieved via adherence to good research practice (including animal welfare), i.e. by conducting well-designed, ethically justified experiments that are subject to rigorous peer review and are well reported.
