Welcome to Engineers Without Borders UBC Chapter Youth Venture! We are an interdisciplinary group of students that share a common drive to solve real world issues using engineering principles. We hope to make a positive impact in communities around the Lower Mainland by engaging youth and equipping them with the resources to make a change. We aim to bring an alternative perspective to teachers and students in order to make an impact on their views on engineering and the university experience. We give students the pathways to put ideas into actions. In Youth Venture, members from all walks of life are able to gain knowledge on sustainability and education practices while having the opportunity to work on their presentation and public speaking skills. In the past, we have worked with both primary and secondary schools in Vancouver to get students to think critically about global change through interactive workshops. We have also partnered with Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia (EGBC) to clear common misconceptions that students have about engineering and STEM fields through engineering panel discussions and workshops. We hope to start conversations that will highlight the problem-solving, innovation, leadership and teamwork aspects of engineering. The aim is to bring students on the verge of choosing their future career paths together with professionals who’ve successfully chosen theirs. Our project for the upcoming year is to hold a case competition for secondary school students in British Columbia. This case competition is centered around the design of face masks for COVID-19 that aims to combat the challenges faced by individuals who have issues with the traditional design, such as: having facial hair, glasses, hearing aids and acne. Ultimately our goal is to promote inclusivity, raise awareness about the importance of wearing masks and empower the youth in BC to use their voice and ideas to make a difference in the fight against a growing pandemic.
