London Classicists of Colour
ldnclassicistsofcolour.weebly.comOur society has two main purposes. The first is to create and maintain a safe, healthy space for students of colour to come together and find a community within Classics: it will provide them with a support network and a group of people with whom to share experiences. The second is to continue the education of all students in topics such as decolonisation, race, culture and identity, and how they are all linked to Classics in ways that are not always obvious. We really aspire for our society to reach all students across UoL, and provide a community and education for everyone who is interested. We believe that currently within the UCL Greek and Latin department there is not enough momentum to decolonise and teach aspects of Classics which are not Eurocentric. Students at undergraduate level do not receive enough information about such efforts, and so we believe that our society will start to reshape how students study Classics across London. It will aid the movement towards non-Eurocentricity, and hopefully spark new research interests. Furthermore, it will provide a space for students of colour who are marginalised by their degree to be supported, and to find a community within a subject which often does not afford them a voice.
