Freedown Food Company was set up in Dorset in 1993, by Danny Russell with the aim of selling venison to local pubs and restaurants. A few years later the current Managing Director John Bengue joined the company, and the two have been working together ever since. Freedown Food was the first company in the UK to see the potential for specialist meats and remains the largest importer and distributor.
