It is a grand building with a classical western architectural style, which was the first one in Shanghai being designed by a Chinese architect. It has ancient Romanesque pillars and marble stairs in the north hall, huge dome inside the theater, as well as parapets with delicate carvings. It was renamed Beijing Cinema in 1950, Shanghai Concert Hall in 1959. Since its establishment, it has been one of the most popular centers for music activities in the city. The hall was relocated in 2002 and reopened in 2004. The hall aims at showcasing high-quality classical music, including symphony, chamber music, solo, ensemble, jazz, vocal and traditional Chinese music. As the first professional concert hall in China, it has always been a cultural landmark of Shanghai. The venue co-hosted several important festivals, such as Shanghai Spring International Music Festival, Shanghai International Arts Festival. World-class artists, including the Chamber Music Ensemble of Philadelphia Orchestra, Juilliard String Quartet, Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, Freiburger Barockorchester, Hagen String Quartet, China National Symphony Orchestra, violinist Pinchas Zukerman, Isaac Stern, Vadim Repin, Salvatore Accardo, Leonidas Kavakos, pianist Maurizio Pollini, András Schiff, La Rocha, viol player Jordi Savall, accordionist Richard Galliano and 10-time Grammy-Award winner vocalist Bobby McFerrin, have made their marvelous performances on the stage of Shanghai Concert Hall.
