The Hefei Institutes of Physical Science (HFIPS) is one of the largest research bases within the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). Due to its main base that is located on a beautiful peninsula in Shushan Lake in Hefei, Southeast China, the HFIPS is also known as the Science Island. Nearly five decades have passed since its founding in 1970. Since then, the Science Island has been expanding its capabilities into multidisciplinary excellence with the concerted efforts by its more than 2700 FSA and visiting scholars from across the world. HFIPS integrates its multidisciplinary expertise and world-class facilities (the Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak and the Steady High Magnetic Field) to seek science solutions to challenges at frontiers: from magnetic confinement fusion to explore strategic energy to environmental monitoring and pollution control technology for environment challenges; from high magnetic field science and technology research to gain deeper understanding of matters and life to cutting-edge interdisciplinary research to solve the challenges in health, modern agriculture and advanced manufacturing.
