Since the great critical acclaim first received after Arcangelo’s first recording in 2011, a selection of Porpora cantatas with star countertenor Iestyn Davies, Arcangelo has embarked on numerous projects that grow continuously more diverse and ambitious. Founded in 2010 by Artistic Director Jonathan Cohen, Arcangelo’s ethos is to bring music from the baroque and classical eras to its highest levels of expression through the collaboration required in chamber music. Six years on, Arcangelo has now become one of the world’s leading ensembles. Arcangelo has collaborated with soloists from all over the world. Arcangelo’s subsequent albums have included partnerships with soprano Christiane Karg, baritone Christopher Purves, bass Matthew Rose and violinist Alina Ibragimova. In February 2015, Arcangelo’s recording of Mozart concertos with the young Vilde Frang on Warner Classics reached No. 1 in the UK specialist classical chart, was awarded an Echo Klassik Award and The Sunday Times Classical album of the week. Together with Christiane Karg’s Scene!, Arcangelo’s album Arias for Benucci with Matthew Rose was nominated for a 2016 International Opera Award. Arcangelo have been just as present on international stages as in recording studios, enjoying numerous invitations to some of the world’s most iconic classical music venues from New York’s Carnegie Hall, to Catalonia’s Toroella Festival and London’s celebrated Wigmore Hall. In February 2016, the group toured with Norwegian violinist Vilde Frang, performing Mozart violin concertos at Oslo Opera House and Zürich’s Tonhalle, where they were described by the Swiss newspaper Neue Zürcher Zeitung as ‘an ideal Mozart orchestra’. Arcangelo are delighted to have a Residency at London’s prestigious Wigmore Hall in the 16-17 season. Having reached a crucial stage in its development as a young ensemble, Arcangelo are looking to take on bigger repertoire challenges and increasingly innovative programmes.
