Our story traces back to 1979 where former prime minister of Malaysia, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad conceived a vision: To create a national car. A monumental challenge even to this day. In 1983, PROTON was formed, laying the foundations to the nation’s pride in the automotive industry. 1985 marked a momentous year in Malaysia’s history. The country’s first national car, the Proton Saga, rolled out to the masses. An elusive dream for most nations, PROTON made it a reality for Malaysia. Since its inception, PROTON has become a key driver of national development as it paves the way forward with technology transfer, strategic partnerships and technical collaborations. Today, with the collaboration of our strategic partner, Geely, PROTON continues to design and build cars as it helps shape the landscape of Malaysia’s automotive industry, while it aims to grow big internationally.
