The School of Medicine is a top-tier academic medical institution known for its innovative curriculum and research enterprise. Anesthesia, as a medical discipline at the University of Maryland Hospital, began in 1913 with Griffith Davis, M.D. the only physician in Baltimore who practiced anesthesiology full-time. The residency program began in 1946 with a team of five residents and a single faculty member, Fred Dye, M.D. The department’s modern era started with the recruitment of Martin Helrich, M.D., who came to Baltimore in 1956 and served as Department chair for 31 years until 1987. He was succeeded by M. Jane Matjasko, M.D. as acting chair. Dr. Matjasko became Department chair in 1990 and served for 15 years. In December 2006, Peter Rock, M.D. became the current Martin Helrich Professor and Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology. In FY21, the Department of Anesthesiology administered over 37,000 anesthetics, facilitated 10,058 patient encounters in the Pain Management Center, and provided nearly 5,163 patient-days of care in the intensive-care units. The Department currently includes 106 faculty, 59.7 CRNAs, 38 residents, 9 interns, 8 clinical fellows and 15 post-doc fellows. The Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research ranks the Department 10th for NIH research funding in FY21. Members of the Department provide care at the University of Maryland Medical Center, University of Maryland R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center, University of Maryland Mid-Town Campus, University of Maryland Rehabilitation and Orthopaedic Institute, and Maryland Proton Treatment Center. The Department has both ACGME compliant Residency and Anesthesiology Fellowship opportunities in six subspecialty areas: Adult Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology, Critical Care Medicine, Obstetric Anesthesiology, Pain Medicine, Regional Anesthesiology and Acute Pain Medicine, and Trauma Anesthesiology.
