Supporting transformational change in shipping By 2050, we are expected to have solved many of the challenges currently facing humanity; We must clean the oceans from plastic waste, we must restore fisheries and coral reefs, we must stop deforestation, and perhaps we must change the way we engage in global trade. Perhaps in 2050, we no longer fly for leisure and perhaps we are all, if not vegans, then vegetarians. Possibly, in 2050, shipping is no longer a giants’ game benefitting from efficiency of scale. In 2018, IMO members signed a pledge to have reduced the carbon footprint of international shipping by half in 2050, which translates to a reduction down to 350 m tonnes CO2 per year, or the equivalent of 56 m roundtrip business flights Copenhagen - Singapore. Regardless of what future scenario we believe in, one thing is clear; shipping is on a transformational journey towards decarbonisation. This will be accomplished through the development of e.g. a more flexible fuel mix, including renewable fuels and its up-scaling through new global fuel supply infrastructures. It will include new technologies and new ship designs. Digitalisation will play a huge part in all this.
