SantaFe HealthCare dates back to the early 1980s, beginning as a group of community hospitals and physician practices serving North Central Florida. In 1986, SantaFe acquired AvMed, taking the company in a new direction, and in 1990 acquired The Village, a Gainesville retirement community. In 1996, SantaFe divested its hospitals to focus on its growing health plan, hospice and retirement community.
