Raise The Children International
www.raisethechildren.orgRaise the Children International (RTC), founded in 2008, is a not-for-profit here to see South Africa raise the bar in terms of education and holistic guidance for orphans and vulnerable children. Our country is reportedly home to 2.4 million orphans and community-wide response varies greatly in relevance, sustainability and impact. RTC aims to uplift the most vulnerable for whom quality education is most inaccessible. According to a 2016 Community Survey conducted by Statistics SA, The North West was home to the third highest adult illiteracy rate in the country at 28.3% and the lowest proportion of post-secondary graduates at 7.8%. Delving into a most basic educational indicator – literacy – reveals that the Dr. Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District, from which over 70% of RTC scholarship recipients hail, has the second highest youth illiteracy rate in the country (13.6%). National and international non-profits focus in hubs of industry in Gauteng, Western Cape, and Kwa-Zulu Natal, leaving municipalities like the Dr. Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District in the dust. Therefore, we seek out diamonds in the literal desert - high potential orphans from remote rural communities in the North West and townships in Gauteng - driven to transform their communities but lacking the resources to do so. RTC aims to equip these 30+ young changemakers-in-training with individualized academic attention, one-on-one mentorship from recent university graduates, and holistic guidance while placing them in adequately resourced private and independent schools. We cast an international net, drawing in recent university graduates from South Africa, the United States and abroad to dedicate a year voluntarily mentoring, tutoring and transferring skills to our community of scholars.
