Business for Sustainable Development (formerly Philippine Business for the Environment) is a non-profit organization established in 1992 by Filipino business leaders to enable Philippine businesses to address their environmental issues and concerns. BSD is committed to the principle of sustainable development. It believes that the business community has a responsibility to protect the environment, and to ensure sustainability of resources on which it depends. BSD has a membership base of 53, of which approximately 50% are from the manufacturing sector (e.g. food processing, cement and chemicals manufacturing), 39% from the services and financial sector, and 11% from the petroleum and energy sector. 80% are large enterprises, and 20% are medium-sized companies. BSD fulfills its mission by spreading knowledge and best practices across businesses, creating synergies between the efforts of companies; and linking business with communities, local governments and other stakeholders to achieve mutual environmental goals. BSD has implemented several technical assistance programs on environmental management with the assistance of and/or in partnership with international agencies like the UNDP, UNEP, USAID, US-Asia Environmental Partnership, the Asia Foundation, World Bank, Japan International Cooperation Agency, Asian Development Bank, International Labor Organization, Carl Duisberg Gessellschaft and Internationale Weiterbildung und Entwicklung gGmbtt (InWent) – Germany.
