History The Bijou Theatre is the oldest commercial theatre in America, located in the heart of downtown Bridgeport, Fairfield County, Connecticut. It was designed by architect Ernest G. Sothey and commissioned by proprietress, Lillian Ashmun in 1909. It opened its doors in 1910 as a dedicated movie house and operated under a variety of names for decades. Today The “entertainment gem” on Fairfield Avenue re-opened its doors in 2011 after an extensive renovation. It entertains people today as it did then, in what is now known as Bijou Square -the Fairfield Ave-Broad St neighborhood. The Bijou Theatre is easily accessible and operates as a concert venue, hosting musicians, occasionally comedians and showcasing films to all of Connecticut and the surrounding region. An integral part of Connecticut’s cultural landscape, the Bijou Theatre provides cultural enrichment and remains an important voice in the community. Rental Space The Bijou Theatre is one of Fairfield County’s most unique special event venues, featuring a 11,000-square-foot event space, as well as a 190-seat theatre.
