The Planning Unit of the San Francisco Human Services Agency analyzes and develops information to support policy decisions. The agency is the city’s public social service provider, serving 130,000 unique clients in a city of about 800,000. The Planning Unit analyzes data, conducts research, leads needs assessments and strategic planning efforts, evaluates programs, and develops grants. Having access to large administrative databases, as well as to clients themselves for qualitative research, the unit is in a unique position to analyze and understand trends related to poverty. The unit has also been fortunate to work with a number of graduate students from public policy programs to examine overlooked and pressing policy questions. The Planning Unit has created its LinkedIn page to keep colleagues and friends informed of its latest research, as well as to share information about job openings.
