Hacked Off
www.hackinginquiry.orgHacked Off campaigns for a free and accountable press. We work closely with victims of press abuse and advise all members of the public. We are not affiliated to any political party. In 2012, Lord Leveson published his report into the press and recommended (like others before him) that the press be regulated by a completely independent system. The Leveson report showed how it was possible to protect ordinary people from cruel and unethical treatment by the press while at the same time safeguarding freedom of expression. In March 2013, the three main political parties supported the implementation of Leveson’s reforms, and so did the public. In fact more than 175,000 people signed our petition calling for immediate implementation. However 5 years later, this has still not happened. Press abuse continues and in the place of the PCC, the majority of newspapers in the UK are regulated by another toothless regulator, IPSO. After 70 years of failed regulation the public deserve a genuine, independent regulator. Hacked Off continue to campaign for Leveson’s recommendations to be implemented in full and for the second part of the Leveson Inquiry into press and police corruption to go ahead as promised, despite the Government's recent decision to cancel it. The corporate press may have the megaphone, the money and the might, but they do not have right on their side. We are committed to stopping the Government reneging on its promises and we will not stop holding power to account.
