Canopy Institute of Design (hereinafter referred to as Canopy), founded in July 2013, focuses on online design education. Canopy has over 200 instructors who have graduated from top design schools around the world, including Harvard, UPenn, UCL, and TUD. Canopy’s alumni network is over thousands people spreading across over 50 cities worldwide, including New York, London, Sydney, Toronto, and Hong Kong. Professor Jerry Wells, who served for ten years as the chairman of the Cornell Architectural Department, joined Canopy as its chief academic advisor. Canopy’s design education covers multiple disciplines such as architecture, landscape architecture, urban design, urban planning, interior design, human-computer interaction, interaction design, service design, industrial design, and visual communication. Canopy’s instructors have on average over four years of professional experience. Their occupational backgrounds cover well-known design firms such as SOM, Kuma Kengo, and Foster, as well as Internet companies such as Google, Salesforce, Alibaba, and Tencent. All the instructors must go through a strict hiring process to become a Canopy instructor. Canopy’s mission is to bring frontier design education to our customers. We focus on the long-term development of our students rather than short-sighted training. We persistently build our alumni network to empower our students with life-long benefits. We develop a flexible course structure for students who aim to complete overseas school applications, cultivate their career development, or enhance specific design skills. Canopy’s yearbook, Exacting Fantasy, was published by Tsinghua University Press on 2016. Canopy’s avant-garde educational practice was reported by Taiwan’s frontier architecture magazine, Architect (issue 06.2018).
