Neotree
www.neotree.orgNeotree is a UK charity which develops technology that empowers healthcare professionals in low resource settings to count and care for every newborn THE PROBLEM: Every day more than 6500 babies die in their first month of life. Two thirds of these deaths could be prevented by improving the quality of newborn care, and delivering proven interventions. However, providers in these settings lack the tools needed to provide consistent, standardised, relevant care and training. THE SOLUTION: Neotree has built a data capture and visualisation, digital education, clinical decision support, and quality improvement system. The Neotree platform has been successfully embedded into usual clinical care at the bedside in newborn wards in low resource settings. We use low-cost hardware and state-of-the-art software. Our technology is developed in partnership with clinicians to ensure it is user-friendly and has local ownership. We are innovating for immediate impact - the platform is open source and fully replicable, so countries that adopt it have complete ownership of both the technology and the resulting data. We are also working with Ministries of Health to integrate the app with national databases to ensure long-term sustainability. THE VISION: For the technology to be used as a standard tool, in an informed way, by healthcare professionals around the world. This will help to achieve SDG3, and save the lives of 1.2 million babies. EVALUATION AND IMPACT: To date the Neotree platform has been used to improve the care of nearly 18,000 babies, by more than 350 healthcare professionals in four hospitals across Malawi and Zimbabwe. Evaluation has shown Neotree to be a highly usable, acceptable, feasible tool that has resulted in both perceived, and observed, improvements in newborn care, such as optimised prescription of antibiotics and reduced rates of hypothermia. It has proven resilient through industrial strikes and a global pandemic.
