Columbia Gorge Ecology Institute
www.gorgeecology.orgThe mission of the Columbia Gorge Ecology Institute is to create life-long learning opportunities that foster a sense of wonder and community stewardship in the natural systems of the Columbia River Gorge. In pursuing this mission, the Ecology Institute is cultivating the long-term sustainability of the Columbia River Gorge through place-based education that connects rural communities in both Oregon and Washington with the unique nature of the region. Since CGEI started its programs 13 years ago it has grown from a volunteer-led community based effort to become the most expansive environmental education provider in the Columbia River Gorge. CGEI serves an average of 2000 youth annually, yet its extensive and in-depth programs consist of over 7000 student contact days when considering the depth of the multiple programs each youth experiences throughout the Institute’s four program seasons. The Ecology Institute also offers 5th grade ecology programs throughout the Gorge; provides middle school students the opportunity to engage in real-world field research with professional ecologists and conservation scientists; provides internships in conservation stewardship and community service for high school students; engages hundreds of youth in after and out-of-school experiences to help them reach their full potential; and many community-based restoration projects throughout the year.
