Emma and James Emmerson, both born in 1973, formed the company in 2003 whilst sat at their kitchen table. Inspired by a shared love of cool design and typography, their brand has gone from strength to strength, guided by an uncompromising stance on originality and quality. Nineteen Seventy Three has achieved great success over the years by creating a number of eye-catching collections including Paper Nature, I Love Being Recycled, The Good Life, The Letterpress Collection, Grafika, The Animals, WOW, Just Your Type and Emma Cooter Draws. Alongside their own brand, they also print and distribute six incredible and unique American brands - Bench Pressed, Egg Press, Rifle Paper, Ashkahn, Carolyn Suzuki, and People I’ve Loved - with more in the pipeline. These brand collaborations mean that 1973 now has a stronger market presence offering extensive choice for buyers with great diversity within the portfolio. Their extensive offer can be found on the shelves of UK stores as diverse as Selfridges, The British Library, Waterstones, Anthropologie and Liberty alongside a global network of distributors and international lifestyle stores. Nineteen Seventy Three also continually invest in developing strong ties with talented illustrators and designers within the field. Following their first fruitful collaboration with eBoy, they have sought out and worked with artists such as Pantone, Sanna Annukka, Belle & Boo, Catalina Estrada, Jon Burgerman, Sukie, Marc Boutavant, Eley Kishimoto, Paul Thurlby, Mibo, Darling Clementine, Susie, Anna Kövecses, Cachetejack, Taisiia Kordiukova, Laura Slater and many more. Sustainability is at the heart of the company’s ethos and they use recycled or part recycled paper, offer all products cello-free, use zero plastic for their shipping packaging and work with accredited local businesses on production to support the economy and minimise their carbon footprint. The brand is constantly evolving and, not content to rest on its laurels.
