Xheme Inc is a biomedical nanotechnology company with its headquarters in Newton, MA. The company is developing a technology for next generation blood bags and tubing, that are free from harmful plasticizers and ensure longer cell viability for better patient outcomes. PROBLEM that Xheme is trying to address: DEHP plasticizer that is currently used in blood bags is banned by EU from 2025 and none of the currently available alternatives are able to store the blood for 42 days, a standard currently followed world over. Xheme SOLUTION: Utilizing funds from its NSF Grant, Xheme has demonstrated that ‘Xheme Nano’ (Proprietary and Patent Pending) can extend the shelf life of human blood. Xheme is currently testing its prototype blood bags to demonstrate that blood can be stored for 42 days or more, while utilizing safer plasticizer together with Xheme Nano infused into the blood bag. Among many collaborative agreements that the company has entered into; the most important RESEARCH COLLABORATIONS are with Vitalant Research Institute, Plastics Engineering Department of UMASS Lowell and a leading manufacturer of blood bag films.
