Celestra Health Systems
www.celestrahealth.comCelestra Health Systems is a new Medtech company based in Ottawa, Canada that is focused on Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Canada has the highest rate of MS in the world, affecting 1 in 400 Canadians. And in the US, there are nearly 1M patients with MS - and with average drug treatment costs of $62K USD per patient per year, there is a very significant market opportunity considering the challenges in accurately measuring the efficacy of these treatments. Also, given the long intervals between patients/clinician visits (in the range of 6 to 12 months), clinicians are often “in the dark” with respect to the health of their patients between visits. And for some MS patients, once the disease starts to progress, there is no way to “turn back the clock”; for this reason, an early warning system is viewed as an invaluable tool for managing the disease. We have assembled a world-class team of neurologists who are guiding the product development and will be leading the patient trials, from The Ottawa Hospital (TOH), Barts Health (one of the largest NHS trusts in the UK) and a leading academic institution in the US. In addition, we have enlisted the uOttawa Faculty of Health Sciences, where a PhD team specializing in biomechanics and AI are developing algorithms to detect MS-specific gait patterns and to monitor for changes in the patient gait signature as a biomarker for disease progression. Although MS affects many dimensions of patient health, walking and balance are typically one of the most heavily affected. The Celestra app itself is being developed by an experienced team who have previously developed over a dozen iPhone and Android apps. In addition to monitoring the patient’s gait under free living conditions, the app will administer clinically validated cognitive and upper limb dexterity tests to provide a holistic view of the patient’s condition. And given the IoT / wearables aspect of the solution, it is well-suited for deployment in a 5G environment.
