aaai.indiana.eduThe African American Arts Institute (AAAI) seeks to preserve and promote African American culture through performance, education, creative activity, research, and outreach. They are the nation's first and only credit-bearing university program dedicated to the performance and promotion of Black music and dance, located on the Bloomington campus of Indiana University AAAI features three unique performance ensembles (African American Choral Ensemble, African American Dance Company, and IU Soul Revue) all directed by industry professionals of high national and international acclaim. These ensembles can be taken for academic credit through IU’s Department of African American and African Diaspora Studies. The directors of these ensembles include Dr. Raymond Wise (African American Choral Ensemble), Stafford Berry (African American Dance Company), and James Strong (IU Soul Revue), all under the supervision of Executive Director, Dr. Charles Sykes. The AAAI hosts more than 30 events every year that impact thousands of students and patrons, including, but not limited to, concerts such as the annual Potpourri of the Arts and Spring Concert Series, to educational programs such as the Annual Dance Workshop and Camp S.O.U.L.
