Special Camps (est in 1995), challenges intellectually disabled children and adults to new activities, increasing independence and self-esteem in loving, all volunteer, overnight camps. More than a camp experience.. we provide a uniquely safe, prejudice free environment where special needs campers and teen camp counselors play side-by-side, both growing in self-esteem and independence while participating in new activities tailored to the individual abilities of the campers. Attending Special Camps is allows individuals with intellectual disabilities to form friendships, build self esteem in a week long summer camp. Special Camps is a safe overnight camp for intellectually disabled kids and adults who could otherwise not attend similar camp programs due to physical, medical or intellectual limitations. Campers play side by side along a teen volunteer, who introduce them to swimming, archery, sports, horseback riding, grooming, crafts, “gold mining”, field games, songs and dance in a structured setting, under trained adult supervision. Not only do we focus on the growth and development of our campers, Special Camps also provides training and experience to it’s volunteer staff and counselors. At camp, volunteers experience personal growth, leadership skills, gain hands on experience living while side by side with our wonderful campers. Volunteers have intense interactions with special needs campers that enhance lifetime opportunities and lead to professional growth.
