Hochschule der Medien is a public university (sponsored by the state of Baden-Württemberg) which teaches media specialists. Since the 1st September 2001, Hochschule der Medien has brought together the combined know-how of the former Fachhochschule für Druck und Medien (HDM) – a traditional educational institution for printing- and media-technologies - and Hochschule für Bibliotheks- und Informationswesen (HBI). Hochschule der Medien covers a broad spectrum of media expertise: from printed media to electronic media, from design to business administration, from library science to advertising, from content for media to packaging technology, from computer science to information science to publishing and electronic media. About 30 accredited Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programmes mirror this diversity. At the moment, more than 5000 students are registered at the university. History of the HdM Through the merger of the Stuttgarter Hochschulen für Bibliotheks- und Informationswesen and für Druck und Medien the Hochschule der Medien (HdM) was found on 1st September 2001. HBI, founded 60 years ago initially as a training centre for public libraries in southern Germany, expanded its range of subjects and tasks and developed into Germany's largest young library and information centre. HDM's roots in teaching printing and media go back to 1853. In 1903, the Fachschule für Buchdruckgewerbe and the Städtische Gewerbeschule trained specialists in book printing. 50 years later, the Höhere Fachschule für das Graphische Gewerbe was founded, where a full course of study in printing technology was possible. The Fachhochschule für Druck, found in 1972, began to train the first media technology engineers in 1979. This set the course for the expansion of its range of courses that were offered.
