Greener Village
www.greenervillage.caA charitable organization that advances food security in the Fredericton Area through inclusive programs and services. Greener Village Pillars: - Food Bank and Clothing Boutique - Learning Kitchen - Community Gardens - Life Skills Development Over 30 years, Greener Village has become a gathering place for those who share the idea that food can bridge whatever might divide us. Just as food brings us around a table, so too can it bring our community together behind our belief that the challenges of life will not ever exceed our capacity to care for one another. The problem is real and growing. In 2012, the Canadian Community Health Survey indicated that 15.6% of households in New Brunswick were food insecure, 2.6% higher than the national average. These figures reveal that there are 47,000 food insecure households in New Brunswick. Within severely insecure households: - a majority reported feeling hungry, losing weight, and cutting or skipping meals; - more than 1/3 reported adults in the household who hadn’t eaten for an entire day; - over 2/3 could not afford to provide balanced meals to the children in their household; - 1 in 6 children in these households were hungry. Founded in 1984 as a conventional not-for-profit food bank, Greener Village has since shed its original model and developed programming that addresses hunger and food security through capacity building and fellowship. We serve over 1000 families a month, or approximately 3000 people, 37% of which are children. Consistent access to safe and nutritious food is fundamental; help us make sure that no one in our community goes hungry: www.greenervillage.org
