Leftovers is an organization that rescues food otherwise destined for the landfill and brings it to service agencies. We work with local restaurants, bakeries, grocers, and distributors in Calgary, Edmonton, and Winnipeg to ensure edible food is kept out of the landfill by redirecting it to service agencies and into the hands of those who need it most. Every week, we divert 6000lbs of food. Leftovers was founded in Calgary, and we have expanded to Edmonton, and recently, Winnipeg. Not only are we helping alleviate food insecurity in Calgary, Edmonton, and Winnipeg, we are reducing food waste, raising awareness, and helping to build community relationships between businesses and service agencies. In the spring of 2019, we rolled out a new app to connect volunteers with food redirection routes, making it easier than ever to make sure good food gets eaten and stays out of our landfills! We redirect edible food with the help of a dedicated army of volunteers from vendor organizations, service agencies, and community members. In 2019 alone, we rescued 311,602 lbs of food, which is equivalent to about 164,126 meals provided. Last year, we worked with 88 food donors and 47 service agencies and diverted 72.33 tonnes of CO2 from the atmosphere. Since then, we have introduced multiple new programs and initiatives to help keep even more food out of the landfill. Through our Home Harvest program, people can donate their locally grown produce and have volunteers harvest the produce to be used in upcycled food products or redirected to service agencies.
