The TMJ Association, Ltd. (TMJA) is a nonprofit, patient advocacy organization whose mission is to improve the quality of health care and lives of everyone affected by temporomandibular disorders (TMD). Temporomandibular disorders (TMD), commonly called TMJ, are a complex and poorly understood set of conditions characterized by pain in the jaw joint and surrounding tissues as well as limitation in jaw movements. TMD pain may range from mild discomfort to severe and intractable jaw dysfunction so severe that a feeding tube is necessary for sustenance. It is estimated that approximately 35 million American are affected by TMD at any given time. While both men and women experience these disorders, the majority of those seeking treatment are women in their childbearing years. Our program and services include: • Advocating for the needs of TMJ patients. • Promoting awareness among the public, policymakers, researchers, and health care communities. • Connecting TMJ patients our patient support network. • Encouraging basic and clinical research. • Convening international scientific meetings to explore new findings and recommend promising lines of research to further understanding of TMD. • Serving as a resource for the collection and dissemination of information on TMD.
