Books for America is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization based in Washington, D.C. that is having a huge impact on thousands of disadvantaged communities and individuals. Founded in 2002, our mission is to promote literacy, life-long learning and understanding by distributing donated new and used books and other forms of educational media to disadvantaged organizations and schools serving the Washington, D.C., Virginia, and Maryland areas. Recipients include adult and youth literacy programs, public schools, charter schools, transitional homeless shelters, hospitals, military bases, assisted living communities for seniors, veterans' hospitals, women's shelters, hospices, correctional facilities, and other organizations. As of April 2014, Books for America has donated over $6.9 million worth of books and educational materials to organizations in the DMV.
