The Lakehead University Student Union (LUSU) is the democratic voice for the nearly 10,000 students studying at Lakehead University. Our membership includes undergraduate and graduate students across Lakehead’s two campuses in Thunder Bay and Orillia. LUSU’s mandate is to ensure that all students can pursue academic excellence as well as personal and social growth at Lakehead, free from barriers related to income, race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, family status, or ability. Through LUSU, students access a wide variety of services, supports, job and volunteer opportunities, and social activities through clubs and events. The student union owns and operates two major businesses, as well as several services key to students’ experience at Lakehead. The businesses include The Outpost, one of the largest campus pubs in Canada, and The Study Coffeehouse. LUSU’s core services include the student Health & Dental Plan, providing affordable comprehensive coverage of extended health and pharmaceuticals to thousands of Lakehead students, the U-Pass, providing unlimited public transit to students at one tenth the normal cost, and the student handbook. LUSU is run for students, by students. Our democratic structure ensures that every Lakehead student has a voice in how their student union represents them. Through LUSU’s annual elections, students choose their student leaders and decide on specific issues through referendum. Students are also involved every day in LUSU’s decision-making by sitting on committees, answering surveys, attending meetings, and serving as student representatives.
