The Solid Blockchain is based on Hyperledger Fabric, originally developed by IBM and now maintained by the Linux Foundation. It employs a novel governance model to decentralize control of the chain in order to prevent central points of failure without giving up performance as public blockchains inevitably do. In order to enable institutions to adopt Solid, an emphasis has been placed on regulatory compliance in the design of all components of the chain, making it simple for institutions using Solid to comply with regulations. Institutions have so far only been able to do very limited projects which have found the networks too expensive to use, and have had to be closed off to interested parties due to lack of compliance tooling, negating the ecosystem benefits enabled by the technology.
