The Fraunhofer Institute for Interfacial Engineering and Biotechnology IGB develops and optimizes processes, technologies, and products for health, sustainable chemistry and the environment. In doing so, we rely on the unique combination of expertise in biology and the engineering sciences in order to contribute to human welfare, a sustainable economy, and an intact environment with the systems approach of bioeconomy as well as bioinspired, biointegrated and biointelligent solutions. Working closely with partners from universities and industry, the IGB covers the entire innovation chain from fundamental research to industrial implementation. We provide our customers with research services ranging from feasibility studies to application-ready products, accompanied by a wide range of analysis and testing services. The ability to deliver end-to-end solutions, from laboratory to pilot scale, is one of the institute’s strong points. Our key areas of research include DNA-based diagnostics, virus-based technologies, 3D cell and tissue models, functional ingredients derived from algae, water and wastewater technologies, membranes, catalysts, renewable resources, industrial biotechnology, bioinspired chemical syntheses as well as biobased chemicals and functional materials. The Fraunhofer IGB is an institute of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, Europe’s largest organization for application-oriented research.
